Swillburg History & Overview

Historical Origins of Swillburg

The Swillburg neighborhood, nestled in Rochester, New York, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. This cozy, triangular-shaped community, encompassing twenty blocks, has its roots in the area's agricultural past. The neighborhood's unique name is believed to have originated from one of the city's most prominent pig farms, owned by George Goebel. Goebel's farm, located at the corner of Henrietta Street and South Goodman Avenue, played a significant role in shaping the area's identity. It is said the Goebels pigs ate the "swill" that washed ashore from the Erie Canal.
